Cetatea Oradea

Piaţa Independenţei, Oradea, Romania

About

In the fortress there were 10 shops, 150 small stone-made houses, a room for the soldiers, three mills and a jail which was "deep like hell". The princely palace measured 1,500 steps in diameter and had five towers, two of which were made of red ceramics. Three of the towers served as storerooms for ammunition and the captain of the soldiers lived there. The palace had four gates, but only one was used. The church inside was transformed in a mosque. Under Turkish administration, both the fortress and the city were reconstructed. An interesting detail could be the fact that the Turks renamed the bastions of the fortress: Tzinghine Tabiesi (the bastion of the Gypsies = the Ciunt bastion at present), Koperdan Tabiesi ( the Golden bastion), Juram Tabiesi (the Craisor bastion), Kukuk Tabiesi (the Bethlen bastion) and Aga Tabiesi (the Red/Rosu bastion).
