About

Stornetta Public Lands near Point Arena has wildlife, views, and killer sunsets. This 1,132-acre preserve along the Mendocino County coastline just north of Point Arena offers breathtaking coastal hiking along high bluffs. With wild beachfront and beautiful coastal habitat and wildlife, it's got plenty of reasons to visit--not to mention a waterfall tumbling over the sea cliffs to meet the Pacific. The Garcia River, one of the last free-flowing rivers in California, empties into the Pacific here, and it's definitely worth seeing, especially after heavy winter rains. The river is prime Coho and Chinook salmon habitat, and is a key recovery area in Endangered Species Act listings. The preserve also includes wetlands, ponds, cypress groves, meadows, and sand dunes. Migratory waterfowl, shore birds and raptors flap their wings here, so bring binoculars. Inside tip: Hang around until the end of the day; sunsets at adjacent Manchester State Park are especially damatic.
