About
Slavonia seems to have embraced the "back to our roots" movement in a big way and Kod Ruze (trans: At Rose's) is no exception. This restaurant housed in a vintage 1758 building near Tvrda opened in January 2007 and it is full of taxidermed animals, ancient pottery, ancestral photos hanging in hand-carved frames on hand-painted patterned walls, and other regional antiques. Kod Ruze also tries to duplicate some of the recipes from Grandma's time on the menu. Start with a Slavonian plate for 2, generous portions of kulen, local cheese, and crackling "cvanci," or go for a filling bowl of game stew. In winter you can try sarma, sour cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice, and you can have grilled fish any time. Kod Ruze makes its own ajvar, a Croatian condiment made of red pepper and eggplant, but its pastries have a store-bought taste. The menu here changes seasonally and there is a nice list of Croatian wines.
