Bombyx Mori was established by Astrid Tomrop-Hofmann in 1999 and comes from the Latin name for the silk moth. Astrid has a wide range of products including scarves, hats and wall-hangings and was twice awarded the first prize for felting in the RDS National Crafts Competition. There is a studio and workshop with an Asian-style tea-house at her home, which provide an opportunity to see the process of creativity in action.Items are hand-made and unique. Bombyx Mori prides itself on producing only the finest felt and silk items using high-quality naturally-dyed wools and silks sourced from eco-friendly producers where possible. Clothing items have been described as ‘wearable art’.From April to October every year Astrid goes to the Craft Fair in Ballyvaughan, Co Clare on Sundays. Facilities include toilet and parking. As Astrid works here there is a chance to meet the maker. Astrid also gives demonstrations and workshops for small groups if requested and arranged in advanced. Set in natural, forest surroundings the workshop and tea-house are in a beautiful, tranquil location.
