Okay, we confess, Shenyang is not a place people go to because of its culinary reputation. This makes Yuan Wei Zhai all the more special. Perfectly roasted, with a decadent balance of tender meat and juicy flavor, the duck here is probably the best available in Shenyang. But Yuan Wei Zhai does not rest on its laurels: make sure to order the duck bone broth soup to accompany your feast. Further side dishes include tea roasted pork ribs, stuffed eggplant, lotus root with celery and dates and the ubiquitous northern Chinese cabbage. Other highlights include northern stuffed pancakes, savory filled griddle cakes wrapped in flaky dough. Eat early and plan on taking a long, slow walk after wards, the food here is so delicious you cannot but help to overindulge.
