In the heart of mid-Wales is the Coed Trallwm Mountain Bike Centre complete with a log cabin Visitor Centre and Forest Café, which opens daily to ensure that only fully fuelled (with homemade cake type fuel) riders are taking on the trails, the centre is well worth a visit. Handily located right in the middle of Wales, and just 3 miles off the beaten track of the A483 (fifteen minutes west of Builth Wells and an hour and a bit from Cardiff) it is easily accessible and also makes a handy base for a week of riding in Wales with Cwm Carn, Afan and Nant Yr Arian all just an hour away. The trails are split into three and graded to enable you to prepare yourselves for the most technical descent. Collectively, the single track comprises 15km, and the team running the centre are always adding to this with one new section almost complete and several others in the planning stage. The climbs are based on forest roads with some technical sections, and the descents, which weave among the trees and also take in some open sections, are fast flowing. While challenging, the top of the Black Trail rewards you with a stunning view of mid-Wales’ highest point the Drygarn Fawr to the west and the top of the Brecon Beacons to the south. The centre is very biker friendly with a FREE bike wash, two power showers, good parking and a welcoming café which sells good food and allows in the muddiest of bikers, as well as stocking some basic bike bits and a couple of hire bikes (ring in advance to hire). To the rear of the centre are camping plots among the trees and breakfast/packed lunches are available. For those seeking more comfort, there are 8 self-catering holiday cottages dotted around the forest, some allow dogs and most have access to lockable bike sheds.
