French-Japanese,this is one combination few will have heard of. Yet, this is exactly what is on offer at the Umai Restaurant at the Overton Square in midtown Memphis. Its chef is Japanese, but is deeply influenced by the French culinary tradition. The result is that one can sample fish cooked in the traditional Japanese style accompanied with Sardinian shortbread! The taste may be unexpected, but not unpleasant in the least. Also, the combined focus on the presentation of food by both Japanese and French cuisines, results in the creation of aesthetic dishes that are pleasing to the eye and the palate. The décor of the place does not follow any particular theme with one dining room covered in cane and the other in graffiti, while harbouring an open kitchen.
