About
Learn about shipwrecks, storms, and more on guided tours year-round.
From 1889 until 1974, families lived and worked in the lighthouse buildings atop Point Sur , 19 miles south of Carmel along State 1. Today, it’s the only turn-of-the-century light station open to the public in California. The stone lighthouse still guides ships, now via an automated system.
The unmissable sentry, visible from the highway, is worth a visit as you travel along the Big Sur coast, especially on weekends when you can join a guided three-hour walking tour of the facility. (The tour is also offered seasonally on Wednesdays.) Just remember to wear layers, as chilly ocean winds can be brisk here, especially as the fog comes in.
