About

The Looking Glass walking track leads walkers through the colourful woodlands of the Maranoa River in the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park, where pink trunks of smooth-barked apple trees rise above a carpet of wildflowers. Wind has eroded a cave right through an isolated pillar of Precipice Sandstone standing by the Maranoa River. This spectacular ancient sandstone formation has been appropriately labelled "The Looking Glass". This walk can also be done as part of a 5.8 kilometre circuit that starts on the same track and visits 'The Tombs' and 'The Chimneys'. Be prepared for extreme temperatures at Mt Moffatt. In winter, temperatures may fall well below zero, while in summer they may reach more than 30 degrees Celsius. Storms are frequent in summer. Take plenty of water and wear a hat. April to October is the best time to visit, as the rain during the summer months can make access difficult.
