About
Taverna dos Bêbobos (Tavern of Drunks), on the riverside dock, is the oldest (founded in 1876) and smallest restaurant in Porto. The ground floor has a service bar with every sort of knickknack on its little tables. A narrow, open staircase leads to an intimate dining room with a corner stone fireplace and a coved ceiling. The portions are large enough to be shared. To begin your typically Portuguese meal, you might order a hearty bowl of caldo verde (soup of ham hocks, greens, and potatoes) or a plate of grilled sardines. For a main course, we suggest trout with ham, codfish with béchamel sauce, or pork prepared Alentejana-style (with savory clam sauce). All these dishes show flair and technique. Seafood rice and any of a number of grilled fish are also popular.
