St. Matthias Church, Vepery. One of the oldest churches in Chennai which was built by the British. Its also has a higher secondary school in the campus which has both boys and girls studying in the school. St. Matthias' Church was originally a Mission Chapel of the French Capuchin Friars, dedicated to our Lady of Miracles. The misfortunes of war fell upon it during the occupation and rendition of Fort St. George by the French in 1746-48 and with harsh justice, the Church was held forfeit and delivered to other hands when English rule prevailed. It was no new ground that was being set apart for Church work, for the garden in which the building was to rise to completion was a part of plot which already held within its bounds the various buildings of the old Vepery Mission of SPCK.
