About
Hang out at a something-for-everyone beach
Everyone plays at the foot of Tamarack Avenue. Officially known as Carlsbad State Beach, Tamarack has swimming, surfing, windsurfing, good fishing (try the jetties), and kayaking. It also has a wide spread of sand that’s made for play, making it a particularly popular family beach for the locals, like skateboard legend Tony Hawk, who hangs out here with his kids. Surfing waves, formed here by offshore reefs and sandbars off Tamarack and other nearby surf spots range from gentle beginner-friendly breakers to challenging tubes. Get in on the fun by taking a lesson with Carlsbad Surf School . When the afternoon wanes, don’t leave. There’s a reason the locals stay on the beach or gather on the bluff above; Tamarack has stunning sunsets. After dark, explore nearby Carlsbad Village, with assorted restaurants and shops. Tip: There’s a small beach parking lot at Tamarack, but it’s almost always full. Check for street parking off Carlsbad Boulevard.
