About
In 1928, Chez Dimitri opened for business in Ouarzazate -- the first restaurant in the then frontier outpost. The owner's son is now in charge of one of the most consistently popular restaurants in town. Located in the heart of the city center -- it's often used as a geographical locater for travelers -- the interior has a touch of the Mediterranean but the walls are all Hollywood, with autographed pictures of stars and wannabe stars who have come for dinner. A wood-fire stove keeps things warm in winter, but the outside veranda is the obvious dining spot in the warmer months. The menu has a wide variety of dishes ranging from a delicious chicken tagine with dates and figs and tagliatelle with salmon to Thai-style stir-fried beef and, of course, a house moussaka. Make sure to leave room for a chocolate mousse or bananas flambéed in dark rum. Befitting the Mediterranean connection, there's a good wine and aperitif/digestive menu. Although Dimitri's food is wholesome rather than outstanding, the location and atmosphere are unrivalled.
