Pumpkins
33 Rue d'Alembert
Cuisines: American
About
If you crave a little taste of the States, come to Pumpkins. Bob, a native Minnesotan and his French wife Sylvie serve authentic American food just like back home. Unlike many French restaurants, there is no fixed price menu. Four or five dishes are usually on offer. Same goes for desserts. One dish or dessert changes every two weeks, so the choice rotates. Popular selections include the spicy Cajun catfish, tortilla-wrapped chili, and the Ruben sandwich. Each plate comes dressed with vegetables, rice, various salsas, and whatever the chef (Sylvie) feels inspired to add. Pumpkin's also does an annual Thanksgiving dinner, complete with all the trimmings. Brunch, hosted every other Sunday, is a must. A word of advice: reserve ahead of time. They often turn down as many people as they accept, since the dining room can only seat 30-40 people. Since Bob and Sylvie are usually the only ones running the restaurant, don't expect your meal to be ready in just a few minutes. Depending on the crowd, you sometimes need a bit of patience. Why not bring a book or newspaper, enjoy a delicious Margarita or Cape Codder, and soak up the atmosphere. The music, like the food, is always good.
