The Club was formed in 1979 by the amalgamation of Exeter and Semaphore Central.In 1995 the Port Adelaide Football Club was awarded an AFL licence, thereby dividing the organisation into the AFL Port Power and the SANFL Port Adelaide Magpies. This left the latter without training facilities, so it was proposed that the Magpies merge with Port District to form Port Adelaide District fielding teams in the SANFL and SAAFL and both training at Largs Reserve. This would give Districts access to more players as it became a virtual 'C' grade for the Magpies.
