North East Wales Wildlife (NEWW) was formed in 1986, at a time when urban wildlife conservation was being recognised as an important issue, exemplified by the loss of pond habitats in North East Wales. As a result of the increasing pressures on land availability for a variety of development uses, it became evident that North East Wales supported potentially important amphibian populations of Great Crested Newts. Later in 1992 research work carried out by the Group and funded by the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) demonstrated clearly that Great Crested Newts were distributed throughout North East Wales, and in particular Deeside and Buckley, where the Group originated. North East Wales Wildlife takes on and manages sites which have been offered as mitigation areas by developers. It also runs an extensive programme of talks, walks and community events and an annual training programme. During its existence, NEWW has developed experience and expertise in many aspects of urban conservation, preservation and management of wildlife and developing community relations. It is however particularly well known for its expertise in amphibian conservation.
