Museo de Artes Decorativas

Calle Recoleta, 683

About

This museum has been open since 1982 and has been exhibited in three different locations, and since 2005 has been housed in the Convento de la Recoleta Dominica (Dominican order convent in Recoleta). Most of the pieces exhibited were donated by a single donor (Coleccion Garces), though its more than 2500 pieces represent a wide example of decorative arts, exhibiting lovely items that are (in the museum's description) artistic, useful and beautiful. Among the items on display there are 20 different subtypes, from arms to porcelain, ceramics, ivory and more, and from the Far East to Latin America, from Ancient Greek to modern times. But the true showstopper is the European and North American glass collection, which is broad in scope and represents a kind of survey approach to art, with many examples from a variety of eras and provenances. The colonial South American silver collection is also impressive, as well as the jewels, ivory and other objects from the Far East.
