Central Antikvárium is the city's oldest and largest old-and-rare book bookstore. Indeed, it is said to be the largest of its type in all of central Europe. Opened in 1885 across the street from the Hungarian National Museum on "Antikvárium Row" (Múzeum krt. was the antikvárium u. during the pre-World War I era, home to 37 different shops at that time), this shop has books, prints, maps, and a shelf of assorted really junky and dusty knickknacks. The staff are fluent in English but can be abrupt with English speakers. Hours are Monday through Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
