Nagara is a small town located about 90 kms from Shimoga town. Nestled in the midst of the Western Ghats, Nagara houses Shivappa Nayaka's Fort. Earlier known as Bidanoor it was built between 15th and 16th century. Nagara was won over by Hiriya Venkatappppa Nayaka from the Honneya Kambali rulers in the 15th century. Veerabhadranayaka, his successor made Bidanoor his capital and in 1645 Shivappa Nayaka ascended the throne here and later went on to fortify the area.
