The area, on which there is a Fortress Gripe today, had a significant part in the town's history yet from the Turk's breach on European ground in 15th and 16th century, while the walls which make the fortress today have been elevated in 17th century. Through the entire history, because of its defensive character, the fortress had military function, and within the barrack and other military objects have been built. Because of that surrounding, the fortress was for a long time the ideal place for accommodation of Military and Maritime museum whose exhibitions have gave evidence about a rich military - maritime history of these grounds. The Croatian sea museum of Split, which develops on foundations of Military and Navy museum and civil Maritime museum of Split, is founded in 1995 after the fall of Yugoslavia and the end of fatherland war.Today, the Croatian Maritime Museum of Split is a modern museum institution in which the military and civil maritime history remains are successfully bounded. In the museum you have the opportunity to see the famous mariners way of life, but also the way of life of common people, as the sea was always a part of our ancestors life.
