If you need to get out of the city and inhale a bit of fresh air, Charmant Som offers a real break in less than half an hour from Grenoble. You don't have to be an avid hiker to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere. Many people just drive up, pull out lounge chairs and relax in the mountain sun. Others may enjoy wandering around the pastures where cows graze in the summer. Hikers will want to trek to the summit, where they will be rewarded with a view of the Chartreuse monastery and of the Mont Blanc. The hike isn't very difficult, but it does require good, sturdy shoes. The Auberge Resturant du Charmant Som is open June to September and offers cheese fondu or a plate of mountain specialties for hungry hikers. Many locals hike up to the Charmant Som cross then enjoy an afternoon snack of blueberry pie at the restaurant. Made with a brioche crust, it's probably one of the best in the Grenoble area. Behind the restaurant, a small cheese shop sells tomme de chartreuse and sérac cheeses, as well as fresh cream and fromage blanc (somewhat similar to cottage cheese). They don't take bank cards, so bring cash. You may also bring a picnic up to Charmant Som, just be sure to take all of your trash with you. The easiest way to get to Charmant Som is by car. Directions: From Grenoble, follow the D512 through La Tronche, Corenc, Le Sappey en Chartreuse, and Col de Porte. Veer left at the Col de Porte (do not go down towards St. Pierre de Chartreuse) towards Charmant Som (6 km).
