The Feira da Ladra or "Thieves' Market" – Lisbon's biggest and liveliest flea market – is also its most endearing. For over a century bygones and bric-a-brac have changed hands at this site on Campo de Santa Clara at the edge of the city's Alfama district. The market is a sprawling bivouac of tented stalls, over burdened tables and simple rolled out blankets, and there is something for everyone. Hand-painted lacquered tiles, theatre programmes, coins, old postcards, militaria, His Master's Voice gramophones, carpenter's planes, terracotta wine jars, cast-iron door knockers... the range of artefacts and curios for sale is vast. An educated eye might pick out a good quality antique or an interesting collectible amongst the tat, and if you're prepared to haggle you could take home a bargain.
