About
Eros in Mohandiseen is one of those typical Cairo restaurants where you aren't quite sure if it's a restaurant or a cafe. It's a huge space, with a large outdoor area complete with multi-barrel palm tree, and an air-conditioned indoor area decorated with Greek mythology motifs. The menu at Eros is massive, offering the standard Cairene pizaa-pasta-salad-sandwich fare, plus beef and chicken dishes and a lot of oriental stuff. The lamb fattah is pretty good: a torpedo of soft, fatty lamb with rice and bread in a very slightly piquant tomato sauce. The veal with blue cheese is also nice, with the tangy sauce taking on earthy undertones because of the mushrooms in the dish. Be aware that portions at Eros are huge! Other than the setting, and the chance to get some half decent Egyptian food (they have pigeon, quail and okra tagen too), the biggest draw of Eros is its shisha pipes. They have a whole range of flavours, including unusual ones such as coca-cola and chewing gum, as well as gourmet tobacco from Bahrain. Eros also has a good selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, such as watercress with banana (tastes of sweet chlorophyll with undertones of banana) and coconut, cantaloupe and ice-cream (super-sweet with a refreshing tang). The service at Eros is friendly and reasonably efficient, though the staff don't always speak great English and barely seem to know their own menu. From 7:00 pm a DJ spins Arabic pop tunes out in the garden, which tends to get pretty busy. Overall, not a bad choice for Mohandiseen.
