About

This park was created to preserve the Nilgiri Tahr, which is a rare species of wild goats found only in south of the Himalayas. The vegetation of this park mainly includes Shola forests and grasses. The Eravikulam National Park is located in the Idukki district on the borders of the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. According to the historic records, Rajamalai and Eravikulam owned this area during the British rule. It was later given to the Kannan Deven Hills to facilitate tea plantation. It later became a sanctuary and in 1978, it was declared as a national park. Common animals spotted in the Eravikulam National Park include Nilgiri langur, small-clawed otter, elephant, Nilgiri marten, Nilgiri wood pigeon, and a rare tiger or leopard.
