Chilango

Buenos Aires, 201 Cuisines: Mexican

About

WAlk through the skull-painted entrance of this out-of-the-way restaurant in Recoleta, Santiago, and you'll wonder if you're in California, or maybe Mexico. It's painted bright red inside, and there are just a few tables and stools which look into the kitchen, a simple affair, where everything is cooked on the grill while you wait. The menu is varied, fairly inexpensive, and though you won't find any beans and rice on the menu, there are burritiso, the sandwiches with a layer of beans and meat on them, drowning in a sauce you'd with you had a spoon for. They also make "costras" a melted, crunchy cheese base for meat toppings as well as probably the only fish tacos in Santiago. It's an informal place,a nd service cna be slow, so get there with plenty of time, and a good appetitite for food that's much spicier than most you'd find in Chile.
