Cardiff's Parkland Palace & Gardens

National Museum Cardiff (meeting Point), Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3NP, Wales

About

A 90 minute guided walk telling the story of one of the city’s greatest secrets: no royal palace like you see in many European cities, but a unique parkland palace of civic buildings, whose domes and facades sit among formal gardens and tree lined avenues. We start in the heart of bustling Victorian Cardiff and take the short walk to Cathays Park where the civic buildings stand. Along the way hear how the Victorian town fathers dreamed of creating a new city, combining pride in Cardiff’s sudden wealth with a rediscovery of Welsh nationhood and culture not felt for centuries. As we wander around and into* the Civic Buildings see obvious and “secret” symbols of national pride in its architecture. Also hear some surprising facts about this site’s forgotten past: medieval farmers; a magnificent house; an Indian temple; a lake; a jungle; and a giant garden party! *entrance to buildings subject to timing and availability. The tours are private by appointment only.
