Café Jouliana
Corner rue El Antaki and rue Abou Alaa al Maari
About
This unassuming stock-standard Moroccan cafe doesn't see many travelers but is regularly full, especially in the mornings when Tanjawis pop in for one of the cheapest and tastiest breakfasts in town. Choices include a Moroccan flat loaf with goat cheese, fresh cake, and miel (honey) or khalii (poached) egg on toast; a personal favorite is a fresh baghrir (a large pancake with lots of little open pockets) smothered in argan amlou paste and topped with crushed almonds. These can all be ordered as a petit dejeuner (breakfast plate), which includes fresh orange juice, tea, or coffee and a side of olives. Its location at the top of rue el Antaki is one of the first spots to catch the sea breeze; sit outside under the awnings or inside in one of the two air-conditioned levels. Although the cafe is local, it's also female friendly.
