Café de la Table Ronde

7 place St Andre Cuisines: French

About

La Table Ronde is France's second oldest café, created in 1739. Only the Procope in Paris has been serving French coffee longer. With so many years under its belt, La Table Ronde has seen its share of history. Stendhal and and Sarah Bernhardt used to dine here. Pierre Choderlos de Laclos supposedly came up with the plot for Dangerous Liaisons here. Bernadotte, future king of Sweden supposedly fell in love with a waitress here. Since the Grenoble theater sits just across from the café, actors and actresses regularly stop in for a meal or a drink. The menu offers fixed price lunch menus for 10 euros (appetizer + main dish or main dish + dessert) and offers a thorough selection of regional and French specialties. The tartiflette or braised diot sausages make for a hearty winter meal, while warmer days call for Niçoise or Lyonnaise salad. Outside dining offers a great view of the surrounding square. If dining inside try, to get a table in the front room for its yesteryear Art Deco decor. Locals also crowd here during the warm summer evenings just to have a drink on the Place St. André.
