The Gompa or monastery situated close to the city center is a few minutes' walk away from the Chowrasta. This brightly colored monastery looks even more glorious as it is flanked by the grand Kanchenjungha in the background. A branch of the Nygmapa sect's Phodang Monastery of Sikkim, the library here has preserved the original copy of the Book of the Dead. The shrine was transferred to Darjeeling only in 1879 and originally was placed on the Observatory Hill.
