Bab Zuweila, built in 1092, is one of only three that remain. The other two, Bab al Futuh and Bab al Nasr, were built at about the same time, and even as recently as the late 19th century were used to close off the city. Bab Zuweila, the southern gate, was also oftenthe site of public executions.
