Roughly 10 kilometers from Mersing (two hours from Johor Bahru) lies a beachcomber's paradise. Cast off the shackles of urbanization for the endless stretches of grayish sands that play host to the annual sea carnival and fun fair "Pesta Air Papan," celebrated on the first of May. Stay at one of the many traditional resorts and chalets before scooting off to the neighboring islands in the morning. The journey by speedboat takes two hours, while traveling on a normal boat will take four hours. Day trips to Pulau Batu Gajah and Pulau Setingan are provided for a nominal fee.
