Seoul is a city with a long history whose birth dates back to the early Baekje period some two millennia ago. Since then the settlers in the city have continued to create a wealth of valuable cultural and historical heritage, ranging from prehistoric artifacts to the relics of the modern period and from trivial household objects to the great masterpieces that are now registered as World Cultural Heritage pieces. Some of the finest representations of Korean history are concentrated in the city including the royal palaces, fortress walls, books and scriptures, pottery, painting, calligraphy, clothing and many others.
