Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Ayutthaya, ThailandAbout
Wat Phra Si Sanphet is located at the heart of Ayutthaya's UNESCO World Heritage Historical Park. The temple and the Royal Palace in which it sits were the most important sites in ancient Ayutthaya. This is where the Kings of Ayutthaya came to worship and is considered to be the prototype for the layout and architecture that you can seen today in the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok.
The original temple was built by Prince U-Thong in 1350 and was much smaller that the Royal Palace complex that you can see today. A year later Prince U-Thong established the city of Ayutthaya a his kingdoms capital and was given the title of King Ramathibodi.
During the next 140 years the temple and the palace complex would grow in size and go through many different permutations as each King attempted to leave their mark on the city of Ayutthaya.
