2/4 Seacrest Ave | Blackmans Bay, Tasmania 7052, Australia

About

The Eddystone Lighthouse, built in 1887-89, is important for its association with the development of navigational aids in the Bass Strait region. Its construction demonstrates the importance of Banks Strait to shipping between Melbourne, Hobart and Launceston during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Eddystone Lighthouse is significant as a dramatic landmark feature, located on Eddystone Point, a prominent granite headland. The lighthouse, constructed of locally quarried granite, has a high level of aesthetic appeal. The lighthouse is in good condition. The original light source and lens have been removed. The original Chance Bros. 3700mm diameter cast iron and copper lantern remains intact. The lighthouse also retains an early twentieth century Chance Bros. mercury float pedestal for a first order optic and an early twentieth century Chance Bros. 920mm first order 6-panel catadioptric flashing lens.
