Village préhistorique de Cambous

Viols-en-Laval

About

Traces of distant ancestors as far back as prehistoric times have been discovered in the Languedoc which was something of a communications crossroads. The occasional menhir or dolmen on the side of the road is not so unusual. It should come as little surprise therefore to learn that the oldest village in France, dating back at least 2000 years old, is located in Cambous. The settlement has been largely reconstructed but there are also fairly intact vestiges of original buildings. Traces of the past include flint, ceramics, statues and menhirs, each object revealing a little more of the lives of the prehistoric inhabitants. To get there, take the D32, direction Le Vigan.
