One hundred years ago, this building housed a butchery complete with slaughterhouse. Today, the slaughterhouse no longer exists, but the butchery remains, with three generations of the Verkerk family providing traditional European style butchery. Alongside their mouth-watering selection of salami, continental sausages and ham, Verkerks sells traditional Dutch groceries and Italian breads, Canterbury raised beef (smoked or roasted), specialist Asian cuts, and gourmet meats such as Ostrich. The building has undergone a recent face-lift with the eastern wall now featuring a tiled mural inspired by the works of celebrated Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
