Vergiliano Park
Salita Della Grotta
About
The small Parco Vergiliano lies in Mergellina, close to the station of the same name and behind the church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta. It contains an interesting archaeological walk along a winding path to the memorial stone of Giacomo Leopardi, then to the entrance of the Neapolitan Crypt dug out of the tufa of Posillipo hill by the Romans to connect Neapolis to the district of Flegrea. Along the route you will come to the entrance of what the Neapolitans consider the Tomb of Virgil, the greatest poet during the age of Augustus and considered a sorcerer who was worshipped as a god by the ancient Neapolitans.
