Urriola

Calle Lastarria 7 Cuisines: American

About

On Cerro Alegre, in Valparaiso, there's a restaurant that captures the best of the port flavors, with a wide vareity o fish dishes, fresh salads, and of course, that old standby, meat and potatoes. Luckily for Santiaguinos and visitors to Santiago, that restaurant, Urriola, has recently opened a location in downtown Santiago, in the busy nighttime district of Lastarria. Lastarria is a throwback in time, a cobblestoned area of small restaurants and serpentine streets, and Urriola is located at the southern end, in a small plaza with a few other restaurants and a bookstore. It has ample outdoor seating, a decent beer list, a good wine list (though they don't serve mixed drinks), and mainly beef and fish-based entrees to choose from. Service is speedy, though they won't rush you to leave the table when you're done eating. Starters include a mixed ceviche, meatballs, mozarella sticks and "crudo," a raw beef dish served with lemon. Main dishes include carne al jugo, a thick cut of meat, and corvina chora de puerto, a sea bass with a tomato olive sauce and a slight hint of spice.
