About
This is the site of a Celtic oppidum or town of the Treveri tribe built around 100 BCE on a flat-topped hill about 400 meters above sea level - and it is now one of Luxembourg's most well-known archeological digs. It is believed that this site of 43 hectares/100 acres in aea was the most important town of the Treveri from a commercial and perhaps also political viewpoint until some time in the first century CE, when it was replaced by the Gallo-Roman center of Trier (named after the Treveri), which is now considered Germany's oldest town. Some of the foundations of the old sanctuary/temple complex and the separate residential area have been restored. The site remained an important trading and ironworking settlement until the 4th century.
