The Ringhim Monastery

Mangan, Sikkim, India

About

The monastery is a twenty-minute drive from the main town. Ringhim means "Hermitage Hill" and Gumpa is the local lingo for monastery and literally means "a solitary place", an apt description for the location of most of these monasteries. The monastery was first established in 1852. The old structure, which had a typical thatched roof, was gutted by fire in the 1930's and was rebuilt at the same spot using metal sheeting. The complex includes a sheda, i.e. a school for monk novices.A good view of Mount Kangchenjunga can be obtained from this location. During the various festivals and pujas marked on the religious calendar of the area, the Gumpa is a beehive of activity. A highlight of these pujas is the colourful religious dances performed.
