About

The Rękawka Gallery was opened at the Podgórze Cultural Centre in 1987; in those days it was the only institution in Krakow's district of Podgórze where professional artists' works were presented. On September 25th, 1987, the first vernissage was held, which inaugurated the Gallery's work. The Gallery's name was selected deliberately to bring up unambiguous associations with Podgórze. Rękawka, a traditional Podgórze holiday, is known to nearly all Krakow residents. The originally targeted viewers of the shows were local gallery goers. On display were paintings (oil. acrylic, gouache, watercolour, pastel, painting on glass), sculptures, outdoor sculptures, drawings, graphics, (linocuts, wood engravings, gypsum engravings, aquatint, etchings, lithography, monotype), scenography, decorative fabrics (gobelins, kilims, unique fabrics, patchwork, macramé, appliqués), artistic jewellery, photographs, book illustrations, art glass, collages, artistic ceramics, stained glass, even fashion collections or artistic toys. The 'Rękawka' Gallery is primarily an exhibiting institution, however, to make its offer more interesting, in 1989 it began selling contemporary art on commission. Exhibits are staged in the Gallery in monthly cycles. All the works that have been presented here through all these years have contributed to the creation of the Gallery's image: now it is known and close to the hearts of not only Podgórze residents, but also those for whom it will never cease to be 'the gallery across the river'. The following artists have presented their works in the 'Rękawka' Gallery: Jan Bajgrowicz, Iwo Birkenmajer, Piotr Bogatka, Halina Cieślińska-Brzeska, Renata Dziudzia-Martynowska, Teresa Iwanejko-Tarczyńska, Danuta Joppek, Ewa Jończk-Wójcik, Teresa B. Frodyma, Łucja Kłańska-Kanarek, Zdzisława Koblańska, late Florian Korzeniowski, late Stanisław Kuskowski, Tadeusz Łukasiewicz, Adam M.
