Landmark hill topped by two interesting Georgian buildings Nine acres of pleasure grounds and woods offer a tranquil escape from modern life. The Kymin has been used as a picnic spot for over 200 years. It's a great place to sit and admire the spectacular views across Wales. A group of local gentlemen at the end of the 18th century had been in the habit of meeting up at local beauty spots for one day each year to enjoy a picnic. In the summer of 1793 one of the friends suggested the Kymin, and this is where our story really starts. The party enjoyed their day so much that they all agreed to return the following week, and then the following week and so on until bad weather got in their way. Picnics for all seasons This obstacle - rainy days - only prompted the group to start up a collection in order to pay for a building to be erected on top of the hill, so they could continue meeting up without interruption. They soon raised more than 80 guineas between themselves and their family and friends. Plans were drawn up for the Round House and, on 1 May 1794, the first foundation stone was laid. The building was completed two years later, much to the pleasure of the townsfolk of Monmouth, as well as the 'Kymin Club' gentlemen. Please note: a small fee is charged for entry to The Round House
