About

From its inception as an artistic institution (it was opened on 21 October 1893), the theatre on Pl. Św. Ducha was a venue of the avant-garde in theatre. Alongside classics, it put on new plays, in the early days those of Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Lucjan Rydel, August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen and Anton Chekhov, to name but a few. It was here that the premieres of Wyspiański's "Wesele" (The Wedding, 1901) and "Wyzwolenie" (Liberation, 1903), took place. Another of its innovative projects was the staging of Adam Mickiewicz's play "Dziady" (Forefathers' Eve), directed by Wyspiański, in 1901, an important event in the history of Polish theatre. Surprising its public with its premiere performances was the speciality of this theatre. It was in 1909 that the then Municipal Theatre changed its name in honour of Juliusz Słowacki. The image of the theatre today is defined by works that present a portrait of man torn between the old and the new. It has always taken care to ensure that its repertoire is varied and the standard of its performances is high, which is possible thanks to its superb artists. For more than 20 years now, in addition to the Large Auditorium (Duża Scena), performances are also staged on the Miniatura, the second stage, known as Mała Scena Teatru im. J. Słowackiego (the Small Auditorium at the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre). The theatre also has a reputation as "the Salon of Krakow", a meeting place for the most respected members of the cream of artistic circles for anniversary tributes, as well as academics and artists from all over the world. It is Krakow's most representative stage, and the only stage to boast a curtain decorated by Henryk Siemiradzki, which can be admired during the interval.
