About

In the year 2000 the Theatre is celebrating 80 years of its existence, as it was founded in the autumn of 1919. Between the two World Wars the theatre was famous for its light repertoire. After the World War I, when Maria Billiżanka became its artistic director, the profile of the theatre changed. It was a theatre playing for children and presenting performances where children played. Among the few-year-old actors having their debuts here was Roman Polański, and Zofia Kucówna had her debut here after she had graduated from the Krakow Drama School. Billiżanka invited the best stage designers and directors of her time to the Bagatela; she summoned Andrzej Pronaszko, Karol Frycz, Andrzej Stopka, two Gall, and Wilam Horzyca. The 1960s are remembered by the spectators thanks to the magnificent management conducted by Halina Gryglaszewska who slightly changed the profile of the theatre, addressing the productions mostly to the grown-ups. This was the time when the stage of Bagatela saw the debuts of the most famous Polish actors: Teresa Budzisz-Krzyżanowska, Jerzy Trela, Elżbieta Karkoszka, Zdzisław Wardejn, Olgierd Łukaszewicz, and Jerzy Fedorowicz. The subsequent artistic directors continued this model of repertoire which made the Bagatela a popular theatre, performing mostly classical and contemporary Polish and world comedies. Today the programme offer of the Bagatela Theatre is constructed in a way that is focused both on the adult and the young spectator and endeavours to instil in the two groups the practice and the need to participate in culture. Mayday, directed by Wojciech Pokora, played for the last six years continues to enjoy great popularity. Among the latest premieres there has been Nokturn niekochanego (The Nocturne of the Unloved One,) a recital by Przemysław Branny prepared under the artistic supervision of Ewa Demarczyk and The Secret Garden, a musicalto the music by Steven Markwick, directed by Janusz Szydłowski and based on the famous novel written by Frances Hodgson-Burnett. The easy-to-remember songs in the new arrangements by Janusz Butryma remain long in the memory of the spectators. The director of the theatre wants to prove that in the daily practices of market economy and in the pursuit of the economic success, there is place for business and art to coexist. In order to meet the ambitious goals and eager to win the most varied groups of the spectators, the theatre endeavours to employ the best actors, directors, and composers. That is why in the year 2000, the role of Macbeth in Waldemar Śmigasiewicz's production will be played by Alexandr Domogarow, a Russian actor whose fame was brought by his appearance in one of the most important Polish film productions, namely, Jerzy Hoffman's Ogniem i mieczem (By Fire and Sword.)To commemorate the 80 years of its existence of the Bagatela Theatre, a new version of Balladyna has been prepared: directed by Adam Sroka, it continues the tradition of one of the Theatre's best post-war plays, namely the 1974 production of Balladyna directed by Mieczysław Górkiewicz with sets by Tadeusz Kantor. During the 24th "Polish Classics '99" Theatrical Confrontations in Opole, a production of the Bagatela Theatre titled Kosmos received two prizes: Waldemar Śmigasiewicz was awarded for directing the play, and Piotr Różański for the part of Leon.
