This opera house, steeped in history, set in one of the most beautiful buildings in the Unter den Linden boulevard, is one of the most important opera stages in the world with an international reputation second to none. In its history it has been graced by the presence of world-famous personalities, such as Carl Heinrich Graun, Gaspare Spontini, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss, Erich Kleiber, Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan and Otmar Suitner, all of whom have left an indelible mark on the building. General Director of Music is Daniel Barenboim, who in 2000 was appointed as conductor for life by the Berlin Staatskapelle (Berlin State Opera Orchestra). Central to the artistic work is the commitment to present a repertoire ranging from baroque through to premieres of new works at an outstanding musical and visual scenic level. The building was built as the Royal Opera between 1741 and 1743 according to plans drawn up by Georg Wenceslaus von Knobelsdorff. It was part of the annex to the Forum Fridericianum and was the first free-standing opera house in Germany and the largest in Europe. The building, which was constructed in the style of Prussian classicism under the influence of British neo-Palladianism, was influenced by the shape of Corinthian temples. The interior is decorated in the Rococo style similar to the kind one finds in the palaces of Charlottenburg and Sanssouci. After the opera was almost completely burned down in 1843, it was rebuilt under the leadership of Carl Ferdinand Langhans. In the following years, several alterations were made to it, which ended up putting an end to the strict proportions of the building. During the war, it was razed to the ground. Between 1952 and 1955, it was rebuilt according to the original design by Knobelsdorff and from 1983 until 1986 it was finally completely renovated. Many famous artists have worked with the State Opera - Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the famous stage design for Mozart’s "The Magic Flute," Richard Strauss was active as a conductor here and even today famous artists come here to create and to perform. Starting from the 2010|11 season, the opera house will undergo renovation work until 2015 at a cost of about 200 million Euro. New stage equipment will be installed and the auditorium will be adapted to meet the needs of today.
