The Church of St. Peter (Peterskirche) is located at Petersplatz. It is a Baroque church built between 1701 and 1733. The Emperor Leopold I wanted the old church that burned down in 1661 to be rebuilt after Vienna suffered the plague in 1679-1680. The new church was constructed by Gabriele Montani and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The new church was the first building in Vienna to have a dome.
