St. George's Club
12 Bird Street
About
Formed in 1866 as a club for Port Elizabeth's businessmen, clergy, government officials and other social elite, the St. George's Club has a long history that coincides with that of the city. In 1997, due to decreasing membership, the Club merged with the Port Elizabeth club and its building was sold, but in its heydey it enjoyed such guests as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Today, the building is open to the public for events, accomodations, and meals, and has undergone significant modernization and refurbishment, though much of its historical atmosphere remains.
