Shilin Night Market
Chung Shan North Road, Section 4
About
Taipei's largest, oldest and most famous night market draws in hordes of locals and tourists alike. The sprawling market offers nearly anything you could imagine, from the mundane to the absurd. Put on your bargaining shoes and get ready for some great deals. Come armed with cash, as many of the best vendors won't take plastic. Come hungry, as the Shilin market offers delectable little bits for any taste. Start at the large covered food market in front of Yang Ming Theater, and look for long lines to find the best treats. Don't miss the skewered sausage wrapped in bacon and green onions, fried chicken steak and a cold cup of Taiwan's famous bubble tea. After you've shopped yourself silly and filled up on local flavor, relax in the market's air conditioned movie theater, try your voice box at one of the countless kareoke rooms (called KTV) or kick back with a foot massage. If you have the option, head to the market on a weekday night; it will still be crowded, but nothing like the sea of bodies inching through the stalls on weekends. Feature Image: Lydia Schrandt
