Kediri was the capital of an eastern Buddhist-Hindu Kingdom from 950-1292 AD. visited a Buddhist temple from that period on the outskirts of town. It is essentially a cave carved into a pumice stone cliff with 4 chambers and a large statue of Buddha in the largest chamber of the cave. The site is called Goa Selomangleng and was used by King Airlangga's daughter, the Crown Princess Dewi Kilisuci, as a meditative retreat. She had been offered the Kingdom by her father , King Airlangga, but declined preferring to live a more contemplative life as a quasi-hermit.
