Gurudwara Santokhsar Sahib is one of the five historical sarovers that where constructed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The excavation of this holy tank was started by Guru Amar Das Ji and was completed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji between 1587 and 1589. While excavation, Guru Amar Das Ji found a saint named Santakha, meditating at the site.
The saint demised after telling Guru Amar Das Ji that he was waiting for a Guru to give him salvation. Hence, the tank was named as Santokhsar and gurudwara as Santokhsar Sahib. This historical Sikh shrine is located just 700 m away from Harmandir Sahib and can be reached by walking or taking a cycle rickshaw.
